Why Yoga Nidra? DEEP RELAXATION! Yoga Nidra is a healing tonic,
providing a deeply meditative state that provides the body/mind with
literally slowing down brain wave frequencies.
Yoga Nidra is the quietest version of the “restful yoga trio” (Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra). Each supports the wind-down of your PNS (parasympathetic nervous system) in its own unique way. Fifty percent of our autonomic nervous system belongs to the PNS — our own natural decelerator for greater ease, calm, objectivity and decreased reactivity. The difference is that unlike a Yin Yoga or Restorative Yoga – in a Yoga Nidra practice there is no movement at all once in your shavasana position. Using as many props as you like to be comfortable is highly encouraged and preferably lying on the floor so that your back body touches ground. Suggested props to have on hand before starting your nidra include blankets, sand bag(s) (or a 10-pound bag of rice inside a pillowcase or a heavy book do wonders too), an eye covering, bolsters or pillows wherever you like them. Also a quiet darkened space where you won’t be interrupted with distractions is highly recommended!.
• NOTE: Folks taking care of injuries or chronic issues and pregnant people – for whom lying on the floor is too uncomfortable – please use a couch or bed!
